To most people listening means waiting for their turn to speak.
One of the most powerful ways to tell someone how much you appreciate them is not to tell them but instead to listen, really listen. People love the sound of their own voice, when you listen with appreciative interest you pay them a great compliment. If most people were honest, once they were finished talking about themselves they’d say: ‘I’ve spoken enough about me, now you talk about me.’ If you’re going to be a social superstar you need to fight that impulse. Rather indulge that tendency in others.
